Best Beach Hotels in Denmark: 18 Danish Badehotels to Enjoy Summer

Despite its fairly small size, Denmark has more than 8,750 kilometers (5,440 miles) of coastline… and with so much sand, sea, and sun, it would be a shame not to take advantage of its stunning natural beauty, right?

That’s exactly why badehotels were born! Literally translated to ‘bathing hotel,’ badehotel is a unique Danish concept whose history goes back to the 1880s. Back at that time, it was fashionable for middle and upper-class Danish families to escape to the coast during the summer months in search of fresh air and bathing in the sea.

The concept of a badehotel is simple: they’re typically located within walking distance to the sea or coast, focus on traditional Danish food at the on-site restaurant, and have places to socialize (i.e. a plush communal room). Of course, a lot of emphasis is put on swimming as well. 🙂

Even better, most badehotels include complimentary breakfast as part of the stay, and often other nice amenities (like a private beach, bike rentals, and so on).

If we’ve piqued your interest, you’ll be happy to hear that there are more than 50+ badehotels in Denmark — and we’ve chosen some of the best ones! We’ve (virtually) traveled far and wide, from the Jutland coasts to the rugged island of Bornholm, to find you the best badehotels in Denmark.

If you have the rare opportunity to stay in one of these cozy coastal hotels, we highly recommend that you do!

Allinge Badehotel

Located on the charming island of Bornholm, Allinge Badehotel perfectly encapsulates the character of the island: it’s rugged yet romantic, with whitewashed hues reminiscent of the traditional half-timbered houses found in the city nearby. There are a variety of different rooms, but our favorite is the Suite with Sea View since it opens up to panoramic views of the sea. 🙂

Tisvildeleje Strandhotel

Nestled in a small town just an hour outside of Copenahgen, the Tisvildeleje Strandhotel (‘beach hotel’) has a history that goes back to 1895! In fact, this was one of the original seaside resort towns thanks to a convenient railway connection that was built shortly before. Although the hotel underwent a renovation in 2008, the rooms have intentionally retained their classic historical charm, preserving the original decor with meticulous attention to detail.

One of our favorite reviews perfectly summarizes the hotel’s atmosphere: “What a find! Close to the beach, absolutely cozy and adorable, [and] so aesthetically pleasing in the Danish way.

Helenekilde Badehotel

While we’re traveling to Tisvildeleje, we can’t forget another famous hotel — the Helenekilde Badehotel! Located just a kilometer from the strandhotel mentioned above, this beautiful hotel is set on a slope and has a jaw-dropping view of the Kattegat Sea.

Each of the 27 rooms are decorated in muted mint hues and white shiplap details, along with beautiful retro photos of the town.

Fredensborg Badehotel

This badehotel is all about relaxation — the minimum age for guests is 16, there’s an outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, and the hotel has its own private jetty. The on-site restaurant specializes in seafood (yum!) and French delicacies, and on warm summer nights, be sure to enjoy the view from the heated terrace.

Rødvig Kro og Badehotel

Located just an hour’s drive from Copenhagen, staying at the Rødvig Kro og Badehotel feels as if you’ve been transported to a simpler time, with simple yet sweet decor, whimsical details (like the retro elevator and monogrammed towels), and a relaxing seaside atmosphere.

Marienlyst Strandhotel

Set on the outskirts of Helsingor, Marienlyst Strandhotel is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a luxury beach hotel in Denmark.

This magnificent hotel boasts luxurious and spacious rooms that are designed with refined elegance and a keen attention to detail. Each element is curated with comfort and style in mind, from the chic furnishings to the mesmerizing sea views from the rooms.

Of course, with a hotel of this caliber, there are also plenty of amazing amenities: there’s a private beach (!!) in front of the hotel, an on-site casino, fitness center, restaurant serving Nordic cuisine (Brasserie 1861), and spa.

You can also opt to enjoy a session at the sauna, opt for Sunday brunch or afternoon tea, or go for a wine tasting.

Sandkaas Badehotel

Cozy, warm, and quaint — a stay at Sandkaas Badehotel will feel like you’re visiting your adorable Danish grandma for a week! This badehotel is the embodiment of summer hygge with its charmingly eclectic rooms, delicious homemade breakfast, and a sweet family that runs the hotel.

Stammershalle Badehotel

Set above Bornholm’s rocky shores, the Stammershalle Badehotel’s claim to fame is a sea view that has captivated hotel guests for more than 100 years.

The badehotel places special emphasis on service and quiet luxury with its comfortable atmosphere, gastronomic experiences, and a sense of pampering. The building’s history goes back to the early 1900s, when a wealthy German entrepreneur constructed hotels around Bornholm island and transformed it into ‘Sunshine Island.’

The hotel has plenty of activities for both active travelers and those looking to relax, from long hiking paths around the clifftops to sea bathing, playing paddle tennis, bicycling, golfing, and relaxing at the sauna. During dinner, guests are serenaded with live music on the Steinway grand piano in the restaurant — isn’t that lovely?

Melsted Badehotel

While we’re exploring Bornholm, let’s go further east and check out the lovely Melsted Badehotel. Upon first glance, it feels as if the hotel is the scene of a Wes Andersen film, with its ubiquitous symmetry, whimsical retro aesthetics, and crisp white colors.

The Melsted Badehotel is an absolute must-visit for those who love retro and vintage vibes, a romantic atmosphere, or those who simply want to enjoy a real summer house badehotel experience.

As a pleasant bonus, all of the rooms have a sea view! From the Double Rooms to the Family Rooms, Studio Suite, or Duplex Apartment, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful Baltic Sea vistas.

Hjerting Badehotel

Thanks to a number of renovations in recent years, the Hjerting Badehotel has become an absolutely cozy delight for summer getaways, large groups, and families. There are a variety of rooms, from standard Single Rooms to Double Rooms, Beach Rooms with a terrace and view of the sea, to an entire Vacation Home that can host up to four guests.

Næsbydale Badehotel

While most badehotels focus on traditional Danish and/or Nordic cuisine, Næsbydale does it a little differently — they’re inspired by the sunny and warm flavors of southern Europe! The hotel is also famous for its Sunday cake brunch, which includes coffee and a tasting of various home baked cakes.

Besides the restaurant, the hotel’s rooms have delightfully traditional decor and antique knickknacks, as well as lovely views of the surrounding fields.

Kallehavegaard Badehotel

If you’re looking for a whimsical vacation, Kallehavegaard is it. 🙂

Each room is adorned in delightful pastel tones and traditional wallpaper motifs, creating an atmosphere that’s both magical and inviting. This is the hotel if you want to feel at home and like you’re taken care of.

Molskroen Strandhotel

Molskroen Strandhotel is not just a place to stay — it’s a destination for those looking for an immersive culinary trip against the backdrop of the stunning Danish coast!

As you can probably tell from the photos, the dining experience at Molskroen Strandhotel is an absolute journey through flavors and textures, where each bite tells a story of culinary innovation and local traditions. In fact, the owner specifically noted that “his dream is to create a unique oasis for great culinary sensations in one of the most scenic areas of Denmark” — and we think he’s doing a great job!

Besides the three on-site restaurants, this hotel has plush rooms with comfortable beds and an aesthetically pleasing color palette — everything you need to relax and enjoy your stay.

Gilleleje Badehotel

You can’t get any more hygge than Gilleleje Badehotel! This badehotel takes its name from the extremely picturesque area of Gilbjerg Hoved (where it’s located), which is renowned for its rugged cliffs and sweeping horizons — on a good day, you can even see the Kullen peninsula in Sweden. 🙂

The hotel is open almost all year ‘round and is set in one of the most gorgeous buildings we’ve ever seen. There are more than a dozen room options, from Double Rooms to Family Rooms, King Rooms, and even a peaceful stand-alone Cottage in front of a lake.
