Bornholm Island Guide: How to Visit Denmark’s Idyllic Island

While Denmark is home to more than 400 islands, Bornholm is undoubtedly one of the most popular.

In fact, Bornholm is an island full of contrasts: it’s located closer to Sweden than it is to Denmark; its modern badehotels (beach hotels) are a nice juxtaposition to the traditional culture of the island; and its rugged cliffs offset the soft sandy beaches just meters below.

Speaking of which: Bornholm is an island famous for its sky and earth – it’s often called the solskinsøen (“sunshine island”) because of its pleasantly sunny weather, as well as klippeøen (“rock island”) thanks to its rugged granite cliffs. Doesn’t it sound like something out of Game of Thrones? 🙂

If you’re already excited about traveling to Bornholm, then you’ve come to the right place. Our Bornholm travel guide has everything you need to know, including how to get here, where to stay, what to do in Bornholm, and much more.

From centuries-old castles and cozy fishing villages to beautiful beaches with stunning views, Bornholm offers a unique experience for any traveler – let’s discover it together with our guide to Bornholm island!

How to get to Bornholm Island

By air

Despite being an island far from the mainland, Bornholm has a good amount of both domestic and international flights. The only airport on the island is Bornholm Airport (airport code RNN) and serves seasonal flights from Copenhagen, Aalborg, Aarhus, Billund, and Sønderborg. There is also a seasonal flight from Berlin (Germany) through DAT Airlines.

Likewise, there are daily flights from Copenhagen to Bornholm through DAT Airlines. There are usually up to six daily flights during the low season, and up to 10 daily flights during summer.

By ferry

There are many ferries that sail to Bornholm island, including from cities such as Køge (Denmark), Ystad (Sweden), and Sassnitz (Germany). Let’s take a closer look at each of them:

Ferry from Køge (Denmark)

If you prefer to not waste any extra time on transportation, this is an excellent option – the entire trip is overnight! The ferry departs from Køge every evening at 00:30 (thirty minutes after midnight) and arrives in Rønne (the capital of Bornholm) at 6:00 in the morning.

There are two accommodation options: you can buy a single bunk bed in a shared cabin or an entire cabin with four bunks (i.e. a private room – you buy all four beds). There is also a small cafe onboard. One-way ticket prices start from DKK 49 or DKK 199 for a standard car (incl. up to 5 people). You can book a ticket here.

Ferry from Ystad (Sweden)

A ferry runs from Ystad (a port city in Sweden not too far from Malmö) that transports both passengers and cars. The ferry has several departures per day, including 8:30 and 12:30 in the morning, and 18:30 and 22:30 in the evening. The fast ferry takes about 80 minutes, and there are up to 10 departures during summer (and slightly less during the low season).

Remember to take your ID and passport with you, as the authorities may do document checks!

One-way ticket prices on Bornholmslinjen start from 99 DK in the low season.  You can book a ticket here.

Ferry from Sassnitz (Germany)

Bornholm can also be reached from Sassnitz (a seaside city about 3.5 hours from Berlin). The crossing takes about 3.5 hours. The ferry runs only once a day in the high season (at 11:50 am), and there are no flights in the winter.

One-way ticket prices start from DKK 149 for an individual ticket and DKK 699 for a standard car, up to 5 people included. You can book a ticket here.

  • Nexø (Neksø)– This is the second largest town on the island and a nice option if you prefer a smaller and quieter atmosphere.
  • Allinge-Sandvig – These are actually two towns so close together they’re considered ‘twin towns.’  Allinge is a lovely city with many half-timbered houses, while Sandvig has a very hygge (cozy) feeling to it. Sandvig also has a nice beach and rugged cliffs.

Explore the Quaint City of Rønne

Your trip to Bornholm will likely begin in Rønne, the island’s largest and most vibrant city. Rønne isn’t just a good starting point for exploring Bornholm – it’s a lovely destination in its own right!

Significantly damaged at the close of World War II, Rønne received a generous donation of 175 mahogany houses from Sweden, which have been beautifully integrated into the cityscape and are accessible on foot. A heartfelt “Thank you” to Sweden!

Learn More About the Island at Bornholm Museum

The Bornholm Museum, located in the heart of Rønne, offers tourists a deep dive into the rich history and cultural heritage of Bornholm Island.

There are plenty of interesting exhibits, such as archaeological findings and maritime artifacts to traditional costumes and crafts, gold and silver treasures, weapons and armor, and even the famous Bornholm ceramics. It’s an essential place to visit if you’re looking to understand the unique blend of influences that have shaped Bornholm’s identity over the centuries.

See the Ruins of Hammershus Castle

Hammershus is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Bornholm island. This medieval fortress, located on an impressive rugged cliff, offers breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding area.

In fact, the strategic location of this fortress was quite useful, as it provided protection for Bornholm for nearly 400 years!

Be sure to walk along Hammershus’ ancient walls and imagine the history of the island while you soak up the atmosphere of this iconic landmark.

Likewise, don’t miss the Hammershus Visitor Center. Located about 200 meters from the fortress, this center has an exhibition on the history of the fortress (made in collaboration with the Museum of South Denmark). If you’re feeling hungry after exploring the fortress, you can also try delicious Danish cuisine while admiring breathtaking views of the landscape, the Baltic Sea, and Hammershus at the in-house cafe (Brohuset Café).

Hike up to Denmark’s Highest Waterfall

Did you know that Denmark’s highest waterfall is located right here on Bornholm? Hidden in the serene Døn valley, the Døndalen waterfall cascades into the ocean from a height of 20 meters (65 feet), making it a remarkable sight. Travelers can reach the waterfall on a 2-kilometer (1.2 mile) hike, which takes about an hour or so. There are also other hiking paths if you prefer to make it a day trip.

Autumn is particularly magical, as the surrounding forest transforms into hues of yellow, red, and orange, creating a picturesque setting. An observation deck offers panoramic views of the treetops and the valley below.

See the Round churches

Bornholm is home to four round churches, each with its own unique charm and historical significance. These medieval structures are known for their distinctive circular shape and intricate interior details, including unique frescoes and decorations.

Here are the most popular round churches in Bornholm:

Østerlars Church is the largest and most renowned.
Nylars Church stands out as the best-preserved round church.
Olsker Church is recognized for its elegance and height.
Ny Kirke Church is the youngest of the round churches (its name translates to new church).

Relax on the Beach

Bornholm’s coastline is dotted with a variety of beautiful beaches, each offering its own unique charm and appeal, making them perfect for relaxation, water sports, and family fun.

Among these, Dueodde Beach stands out as one of the island’s most famous and picturesque spots. This is a great place to relax during the summer season, swim in the Baltic Sea, and just enjoy the tranquil environment. The beach is very clean and has fine sand, which makes it even better (not hard rocks! :)). There is plenty of parking near the beach, as well as a camping area a short walk from the beach.

Other popular beaches in Bornholm include:

Balka Beach | Situated near Nexø, Balka is one of Bornholm’s most popular beaches, especially known for its shallow waters and soft sand, making it a kid-friendly option.

Antoinette Beach | Close to the town of Rønne, this beach is smaller and more secluded, offering a peaceful retreat with beautiful views of the Baltic Sea and rocky coastlines.

Sandvig Beach | Near Allinge-Sandvig, this beach features a mix of sand and pebbles, set against dramatic cliffs, making it a scenic spot for sunbathing and picnics. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can also walk the 1-kilometer path up to the Hammer Odde Lighthouse.

Hullehavn Beach | Located near Svaneke, Hullehavn is a cozy beach that is partly shielded by cliffs, providing sheltered conditions for sunbathing and swimming. It’s also popular for its nearby camping site and café.

Visit “God’s Home” at Gudhjem

Gudhjem, a charming seaside town on the northeastern coast of Bornholm, is famous for its steep streets, red-roofed houses, and picturesque harbor.

This idyllic town, whose name translates to “God’s Home,” has a population of only 700 locals – yet it captivates thousands of visitors with its scenic beauty, vibrant fishing culture, and the tradition of smoking herring (a delicious local delicacy!). In fact, Gudhjem is known for its fishing culture, and visitors can enjoy dishes like sprat, salmon, oysters, and more. Don’t forget to visit one of the local restaurants to taste local delicacies for yourself!

There are also plenty of art galleries and cozy cafés, and the opportunity to go on boat trips to the nearby Ertholmene islands (there are routes from Allinge to Christiansø via the ferry).

Hike to Jon’s Chapel

Jon’s Chapel (Jons Kapel) is a remarkable natural landmark located on the west coast of Bornholm, near the town of Hasle. This unique landmark consists of a massive rock formation that resembles a natural amphitheater or chapel. According to local folklore, a hermit monk named Jon preached to the island’s inhabitants (including the sea gulls) from this spot in the Middle Ages, using the natural acoustics of the rocks to amplify his voice.

The area around Jon’s Chapel is characterized by its dramatic cliffs and rugged coastal beauty, offering views of the Baltic Sea. A series of steps carved into the rock leads down to the “chapel,” allowing visitors to take a closer look.

Stroll Through Svaneke Village

The eastern coast of Bornholm has one very special and beautiful town: Svaneke! This colorful town is a testament to the island’s rich history and cultural heritage thanks to its well-preserved 16th-century architecture and winding cobblestone streets.

The town’s charming harbor, lined with colorful boats and surrounded by historic merchant houses, adds to its cozy atmosphere. Some of the best places to visit in Svaneke are the vibrant market square, artisan shops, a confectionery called Bolcheriet (where they make candies according to traditional recipes!), and the local brewery. No wonder it was voted Denmark’s most beautiful town in 2013! 🙂
