Accommodations in Denmark: What to Expect at Hotels, Hostels, and More

When planning a trip to Denmark (or any country, really), one of the first things you probably consider are the accommodations.

Will you stay in a budget-friendly hostel, choose a neat mid-range option, or indulge in a luxurious 5-star hotel?

Perhaps you’re wondering what hotels in Denmark are like? Or if there are any unique accommodations you should consider?

You’re in the right place!

It’s no secret that the Danish are masters of cozy accommodations and practical hospitality. The oldest hotel in Denmark was opened in 1581, which means we’ve had quite a long time to get ready — more than 400 years, in fact!

In this guide, we’ll go over the main types of accommodations in Denmark (hotels, hostels, apartments, etc) as well as some lesser-known options. There’s a special section on unique accommodations in Denmark that are quintessentially Danish, like the traditional kro and classic summer getaway at a badehotel. Be sure to keep reading, as there are some really cool options for your trip!

Hotels in Denmark

Like many popular tourist destinations, Denmark certainly has its fair share of world-famous hotel brands. From budget-friendly offers to mid-range hotels, luxury resorts, and much more, you’ll find them all here!

Budget & Mid-Range Hotels

Let’s start with some domestic Danish brands. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, we recommend looking at Cabinn or Zleep. Both are catered to travelers looking for an affordable yet convenient option. Cabinn has 8 hotels around Denmark, while Zleep has 13 hotels.

Another popular Nordic accommodation is Scandic, which was founded in Sweden but has a large presence in Denmark as well. There are currently 14 Scandic hotels in Denmark, in cities like Aalborg, Aarhus, Copenhagen, Esbjerg, Odense, Velje, and many more. Scandic hotels are usually mid-range and have a variety of room types, including singles, doubles, triples, and family rooms.

Luxury Hotels

Denmark has no shortage of luxury accommodations, ranging from elegant hotels in the heart of Copenhagen to charming boutique lodges nestled along the beachfront. From world-class amenities to personalized services and stunning scenic views, these accommodations are designed to provide guests with an exceptional experience.

One of the most popular luxury hotels in Denmark is Hotel d’Angleterre (it even has its own Wikipedia article!). It was one of the first deluxe hotels in the world and is a 5-star hotel that even has its own Michelin-starred restaurant!

International Brands

Of course, there are many international hotel brands in Denmark as well. These include but are not limited to Best Western, Radisson Blu, Dolce Hotels & Resorts, Crowne Plaza, and Marriott.

Not your typical hostel! | Steel House Copenhagen

Hostels in Denmark

Hostels typically get a bad reputation for being noisy, having a lack of privacy, and being dirty. However, this is quite the opposite in Denmark!

Thanks to the Danish hygge concept and Scandinavian influence, many hostels will surprise you with their clean facilities, private rooms, and other bonus amenities (like free breakfast, an excellent location, complimentary bikes…).

Likewise, the hostels in Denmark aren’t just used by budget travelers. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find that many business travelers, families, and couples book hostels, especially when reading through the reviews of a particular hostel. Of course, hostels are one of the most budget-friendly accommodations in Denmark, so there’s that factor as well. 🙂

The most popular brand in Denmark is Danhostel, which has 64 hostels in Denmark. A Danhostel can be found in almost any large city, and accommodations start around 150 DKK per night!

Fun fact: the Danhostel Copenhagen City is the largest hostel in Europe, with over 1,000 beds spread across 18 floors. That’s a lot of options! 😉

Hygge atmosphere at the Woodah Boutique Hostel

Other popular hostel brands in Denmark include a&o (such as the a&o Copenhagen Sydhavn), Generator, and the Houses (Steel House Copenhagen and Next House Copenhagen).

Besides hostel chains and international brands, there are plenty of fantastic stand-alone hostels as well. Thanks to their autonomy, many hostels are beautifully designed and feel as if you’re staying in a design hotel instead of a hostel!

For example, the Urban Camper in Copenhagen is designed to feel like you’re literally camping (albeit, indoors) — check out that lush jungle wallpaper and tent doors!

Another favorite is Woodah Boutique Hostel, which is the epitome of hygge.

Note: As with most hostels, make sure to double check if linens and/or towels are included before you book to avoid any surprises.

Vacation Rentals, Apartments, Camping, and more!

If you prefer something closer to home (or the great outdoors), you’ll love Denmark.

The country offers a wide range of vacation rentals and apartments, providing a perfect way to experience Denmark’s cozy culture while feeling like a local. Vacation rentals and aparthotels are an ideal choice for families or groups, offering the comforts of home with added perks like private pools and stunning views.

For solo travelers or couples, apartments provide an affordable and convenient option for experiencing Denmark’s city life. Likewise, If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, Denmark’s beautiful national parks and scenic campsites offer an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Let’s take a look at each:

Apartments

Like many European countries, apartment rentals in Denmark are very popular and an excellent accommodation option for travelers looking for that ‘home away from home’ experience.

Not only are apartments usually more affordable than hotels, but they also provide added flexibility and privacy. Most apartments in Denmark are fully furnished and equipped with all the necessities you need, such as a kitchen, parking, and washing machines. This makes them ideal for those looking to save on dining out costs or wanting to prepare their meals.

The great thing about apartment rentals is that they’re typically available in different sizes (great for families!) and locations, ranging from modern apartments in the heart of Copenhagen to charming homelike spots in a local neighborhood.

Camping & Cabins

It’s no secret that Danish people love to camp, and come summertime, it feels like half of the country has gone camping. 😛

There are more than 500 registered campsites in Denmark, ranging from small, basic sites to larger, more luxurious ones with swimming pools, restaurants, and other amenities. Some of the most popular high-end campsites include SØGAARDEN and Hasle Camping.

Many of these campsites are located near the coast (like the Dueodde Beach Camp or in scenic areas, offering travelers easy access to Denmark’s stunning natural beauty.

In terms of cost, camping can be a more affordable way to travel around Denmark, with many campsites offering low-cost pitches for tents or basic cabins.

If you’re looking for a unique and luxurious camping experience, why not try glamping in Denmark? There are a variety of stunning glamping locations, each with its own unique charm and character. Check out Krusmølle if you want to go glamping in a vintage wagon, or Korsgården for a serene escape near the lake.

Last but certainly not least, there are dozens of cozy cabins all around Denmark. If you’re looking to get out in nature but prefer something a little more comfortable — think private bathrooms, plush mattresses, and maybe even a pool! —  check out our list of the best cabins in Denmark.

Families & Traveling With Kids

Since there are many families interested in traveling to Denmark with kids, we updated our original post to add this section.

Denmark is a fantastic destination for a family holiday, and one bonus is that there are many options available for families with children. Many hotels and rental properties offer family rooms or apartments with multiple bedrooms, kitchens, and living spaces to accommodate larger groups.

Some accommodations also offer amenities such as playgrounds, kids’ clubs, and swimming pools to keep children entertained during their stay. Additionally, Denmark has a strong culture of outdoor recreation, and families can often find accommodations near parks, beaches, and other natural attractions that are perfect for exploring with kids.

There are two hotel brands that we wanted to particularly highlight. The first is Lalandia, a popular resort in Denmark that specifically caters to families with children and offers a wide range of accommodations and activities. The resort has several locations throughout Denmark, including in Billund, Rødby, and Søndervig. All Lalandia resorts have an aquapark (called Aquadome), as well as kid-friendly activities like play areas with ball pits, shuffleboard, tennis courts, and more. There’s even an on-site restaurant if you want to relax and skip cooking for the day!

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Lalandia is that it’s located close to many of Denmark’s top family attractions. For example, the Billund location is just a few minutes’ drive from LEGOLAND Billund Resort, while the Rødby location is near the beautiful beaches of Lolland-Falster. All in all, Lalandia is an excellent choice for families looking for a fun, convenient, and comfortable vacation in Denmark.

Another brand that’s family-oriented is Scandic. Kids 12 years and younger stay for free and enjoy breakfast at no extra cost; there are kids menus and coloring books available at most hotels; and there are a variety of rooms for families and larger groups.

Of course, LEGOLAND in Billund deserves a special mention as well! In fact, there is the main Legoland hotel plus four other officially-licensed hotels near the LEGOLAND campus, including a pirate-themed motel, Wild West cabins and barrels, Ninjago cabins, and even a self-service camping area. For more information, be sure to check out our Accommodations near Legoland (Billund) post.

Unique Accommodations in Denmark

If you’re tired of the same old hotel rooms and want something new and exciting, Denmark has a plethora of unique accommodations that offer an unforgettable experience.

From traditional Danish-style inns to serene beach hotels, farmstays, a converted lighthouse, palaces, and more, these unique accommodations are sure to make your trip to Denmark very memorable!

Kro

If you’ve already been browsing accommodation booking sites like Booking.com, you might have come across the quintessential Danish kro.

Kro are historic inns that are easily distinguished by their thatched roofs and are usually found in smaller towns or near major roads, as they were traditionally used as overnight lodging for traveling merchants and diplomats. In fact, the word kro literally translates to inn and are the ancestors of modern-day hotels in Denmark. 😉

Luckily, many kro still exist to this day, and feel more like Danish bed and breakfasts than a no-frills lodge. A majority of kro have beautifully-designed interiors, impressive gastronomic delights, and plush comfortable furniture — it’s like enjoying a vacation within a vacation!

Here are some of the most popular kro:

  • Henne Kirkeby Kro | An absolute luxury! Run by a Michelin-starred chef and has a restaurant that uses local herbs and veggies from the garden. This kro only has 5 rooms and an impressive modern photography collection for guests to browse.
  • Sonderho Kro | Founded in the 1720s, this is one of the oldest kros still in business. The seafood here is some of the freshest and most succulent you’ll ever try thanks to its location on Fanø island!
  • Svostrup Kro | Located less than an hour from Aarhus, Svostrup Kro is an authentic kro that has been welcoming guests since the 1700s. The inn offers both accommodations and dining options, with a focus on traditional Danish cuisine.

Badehotel

While we’re on the topic of quintessential Danish accommodations, let us introduce you to the badehotel!

Translated to beach hotel, a badehotel used to be a traditional seaside getaway for wealthy upper class city dwellers in the 19th century. While the idea stayed the same, the badehotels of today are much more luxurious — think laidback luxury, gourmet restaurants, world-class service, spas and pools… Whew, doesn’t it make you want to book a getaway?

Best of all, many badehotels are open throughout the year, whether it’s summer or winter!
